Chugiak Post 33 ran into tough pitching Thursday at the American Legion Northwest Region tournament in Eugene, Ore.
Joe Schindler delivered a gem for the hosts, no-hitting Chugiak for 62/3 innings and striking out 13 in an 8-1 win over the Mustangs.
Eugene, the Oregon state champs, advance to the winners bracket while Chugiak plays a 1 p.m. losers bracket game Friday against Waipahu, Ha., which lost 12-9 Thursday to Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Schindler was stellar in his seven innings, facing just 24 batters.
Chugiak finally got to him in the bottom of the seven innings, when Devon Ferriss drew a leadoff walk. Ferriss stole second base and, one out later, stole third. Schindler struck out one batter with Ferriss on third base, but he couldn't get past Zach Brueggeman, who singled to left field to end the no-hitter and the shutout.
That was Chugiak's only hit of the nine-inning game, which started at 9 p.m. Oregon time in 80-degree temperatures.
Eugene scored four times on four hits in the second inning, the big hit a two-run single from David Bellamy.
Eugene took advantage of bad defense to tack on two more runs in the fourth inning, when Chugiak committed four of its five errors. Another two runs scored in the sixth.
Chugiak pitcher Chase Wilson struck out seven but gave up 12 hits, 11 of them singles, in eight innings. Half of Eugene's runs were unearned.
