Soldotna ground game buries Eielson 55-19

In a game between two defending state champions, the Soldotna Stars racked up 510 rushing yards Saturday in a 55-19 season-opening victory over Eielson at Buck Nystrom Field in Fairbanks.

Soldotna won last season’s medium-school state championship, and Eielson took the small-school title.

Soldotna quarterback Colton Young stung the Ravens by the air and on the ground, passing for 168 yards and rushing for 80. He accounted for four touchdowns, and shared the credit with his teammates.

“It was a whole team effort,’’ he told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. “It was a heck of a job by the (offensive line). Give  it up all to them, they made some huge holes for us.’’

Sophomore Drew Gibbs added toiuchdowns on runs of 1 and 47 yards and finished with 148 yarsd on nine carries for the Stars, and Tyler Howell caught five catches for 132 yards and a touchdown.

 Tony Griffith, one of six returners from Eielson’s 9-0 team a year ago, rushed for 252 yards and both of Eielson’s touchdowns, scoring on runs of 66 and 61 yards.
