Joe Samaniego, president of the Alaska Young Democrats, issued a press release regarding an award the group earned at the national convention of the Young Democrats of America.

On July 20, the local group hosted the first annual Equal Rights Hike, a public event for anyone that supports equal rights, particularly supporters of marriage equality. Together, a diverse group of Alaskans hiked up Flat Top and hoisted a rainbow flag.

The Young Democrats were supported in their efforts by the proprietors of Mo’s O’Brady’s pub and Mad Myrna’s, and given the success of the hike, the group has decided that next year it will be held again in Anchorage and also expanded to Fairbanks. They are also exploring a Juneau hike.

On August 10, the Equal Rights Hike won the Young Democrats of America award for the best event of 2013. Samaniego was present to accept the award on behalf of the Alaska Young Democrats in front of more than 1,000 delegates from across the nation at the YDA National Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Samaniego wrote, “YDA is now discussing turning the hike into a nationwide event, and it all started right here in Anchorage.”

The Alaska Young Democrats are a statewide organization that re-launched in the spring of this year.
