Instead of throwing his poles away and assuming a proven defensive position, a guide decided to use them as defense against a bear. Not very smart.

When will “we” learn that bears don’t grow up with gun knowledge and that to them a shot is merely another noise? Bears are curious and we mistake that too often as aggression. We don’t shoot every dog that comes up to us, do we?
