Letter: Let’s be sensible when it comes to bears

Instead of throwing his poles away and assuming a proven defensive position, a guide decided to use them as defense against a bear. Not very smart.

Hikers north of Fairbanks used “warning shots” to let their bear know they mean business. When will “we” learn that bears don’t grow up with gun knowledge and that to them a shot is merely another noise? Bears are curious and we mistake that too often as aggression. We don’t shoot every dog that comes up to us, do we?
