Former Seawolf (and, briefly, Ace) is Russia-bound

In his continuing tour of Europe, former UAA and, briefly, Alaska Aces defenseman Nils Backstrom is knocking another country off his list.

The Swede is headed to Russia. According to eliteprospects.com, he'll play for Rubin Tyumen in the VHL (weird -- first time The Blog has ever heard of that circuit), which the Google machine tells us is basically Russia's second division.

Backstrom, 27 and entering his fourth pro season, played his first two full seasons pro in Finland's top league and then spent last season in Sweden's top league.

In a combined 53 games for Timra and AIK last season, he put up 0-5--5 and -8 totals. Hence this last sentence in the abbreviated scouting report posted on Backstrom's bio page on eliteprospects: "Not a very good shooter.''

Oh, hockey humor, you slay us.
