Scotty talks hockey in Florida (plus, assorted notes)

Veteran NHL center Scott Gomez of Anchorage has landed at his new gig -- with the Florida Panthers -- and click here to check a story about him in the Sun Sentinel.

(Just a heads-up. Story references six current NHLers from Anchorage, but The Blog -- always fallible, especially as the old brain pan gets older -- can only think of five: Gomez and Joey Crabb on Florida, Nate Thompson and Matt Carle on Tampa Bay, and Brandon Dubinsky on Columbus. If The Blog is missing someone, give him a shout).

In other Alaska-related news, winger Shawn Skelly, who helped out the Aces for a spell last season when they grabbed him outta the Southern Professional Hockey League -- Skelly went 7-7--14 in 19 games for Alaska -- had his rights acquired by SPHL Pensacola, who got them from Peoria. In the SPHL last season, Skelly went 17-13--30 in 31 game.

In the Central Hockey League, former Seawolves forward Winston Day Chief has re-upped with the Rapid City Rush. Day Chief, who was at UAA for a season (2007-08) before playing Canadian college hockey, hooked up with Rapid City last season. He missed two months early in the season with injury, but was good for 9-12--21 totals and a +4 rating in 37 games. He went 2-1--3 in six playoff games.

Internationally, former UAF forward Aaron Lee, who last season played in the German second division (20-25--45 in 48 games for Eispiraten Crimmitschau), has, according to, signed with the Tilburg Trappers in the Netherlands.
