South returns to top spot in football poll

As you might have expected, there's a whole new look to the large-school rankings in this week's Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network's football poll.

Defending state champion South returned to the No. 1 spot, bouncing all the way back from No. 4 with a 24-0 victory over Eagle River.

And Service (3-1), the previously top-ranked team, tumbled all the way to No. 5 after Saturday night's dramatic 27-26 loss to Chugiak.

The upset put Chugiak (3-1) in the rankings at fourth place, while Lathrop and Palmer traded places after Lathrop’s win and Palmer’s loss this past weekend. The Malemutes (4-0) are second and the Moose (3-1) third.

South (3-1) was No. 1 until absorbing a Week 3 nonconference road loss to Moorpark, Calif., a playoff team last season in California. The Wolverines have yielded only two touchdowns to Alaska opponents.

In the poll for medium- and small-division schools, Soldotna kept its grip on the top spot with an blowout victory -- this time a 64-6 rout of Thunder Mountain.

Juneau, which claimed a 33-24 road win over large-school opponent Colony, is ranked second ahead of Kenai, which edged Kodiak 22-21 on the road to remain undefeated. Soldotna, Juneau and Kenai are all 4-0.

North Pole (2-1) is No. 4 and Kodiak (2-1) claimed the No. 5 spot.
