Aces: Mazz is back; Mele too

The Alaska Aces today announced center Nick Mazzolini, who led the club in just about everything last season, has signed for the upcoming ECHL season, as has winger Tommy Mele.

Mazzolini, 29, racked 36-35--71 totals in 68 games last season to lead the team in goals, assists and points. He also led the Aces in plus-minus (+13), power-play goals (10), short-handed goals (4) and shots on goal (202).

Mazzolini tied for second in the league in goals, tied for the league lead in shorties, was second in game-winning goals (9) and in insurance goals (7). He was voted onto the All-ECHL second team.

So, he's kind of good at hockey. Mazzolini, who is entering his fifth year as a pro and fourth with the Aces, last season centered the first line, quarterbacked a power-play unit, killed penalties and skated in 4 on 4 situations. The ECHL does not track ice time, but, trust us, Mazzolini led Aces forwards in that category.

Mele, 27, last season earned 11-10--21 totals in 43 games for Alaska, and was -4. He scored four power-play goals. He's entering his third year as a pro.

Today's announcement makes 10 players the Aces have announced as signed for the upcoming season. Seven of those 10 are returners.
