Earthquake shakes Anchorage area; preliminary magnitude of 4.0

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.0 shook the Anchorage and Eagle River areas just after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The quake, at 5:02 p.m., was centered 14 miles northeast of Anchorage at a depth of nearly 20 miles, according to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It was widely felt across the Anchorage area.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
