East, West pick up tennis wins

Chugiak’s Diego Velez Gonzalez outdueled East’s Eli Neslund in a marathon boys singles match Wednesday, winning a match that featured two tiebreakers.

Neslund took the first set 7-6, winning a 7-4 tiebreaker to clinch it. Velez Gonzales won the second set 6-4 to force a tiebreaker that in high school tennis is played in lieu of a third set and won it 10-8.

Chugiak also won the other match that required a tiebreaker — the girls double team of Izzy LaRue and Rebekah Jensen prevailed over East’s Kate Alversado and Morgan Rice 2-6, 6-3, 10-3.

East took the team victory 6-3.

Girls doubles 2 — Laura Horton/Erica Williams (E) d. Kailey Gates/Maggie Krafft 6-0, 6-2. Mixed doubles —  Olivia Grant/Jesse Weight-Crask (E) d. Tasha Boyer/Max Haines (C) 6-4, 6-3.


West 6, South 3

Strength in doubles play carried West past South 6-3 in a Cook Inlet Conference tennis meet Wednesday.

Each team won two singles matches,  but the Eagles owned the advantage in doubles, taking four of the five matches.
