Whistling Swan has been bringing an eclectic batch of nationally noted musicians to Anchorage for 20 years and, perhaps in celebration, they'll open the anniversary season with a biggie: Leon Russell, rock-and-roll Hall of Famer and collaborator with everyone from bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones to B.B. King and George Benson. Russell and his band perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the Discovery Theatre.

That's the same venue for Dougie MacLean at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Whistling Swan has brought "Scotland's James Taylor" to Alaska so many times that he probably qualifies for a Permanent Fund dividend check. The last time his trip coincided with an eruption of Redoubt Volcano, a bit of excitement that hasn't gone to waste. We're told he has a new song inspired by the event that he'll be singing here.

Tickets for both shows are available at centertix.net.
