Letter: Begich should be supported for supporting carbon tax

September 12, 2013

There are ads on TV attacking Mark Begich for supporting a carbon tax. Who is placing these ads? It’s a mystery.

What they say is untrue. A carbon tax can be designed so that all the revenue is returned to the American people. Border tariff adjustments would make sure that other nations can’t take unfair advantage. This is not a cure-all but it is an important step toward combating climate change. It is supported by several conservative economists. It will use the power of the free market to make the transition away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy. Returning the revenue to the public will allow that transition to happen without a negative impact on our economy.

If Sen. Begich will support this approach, then we should support him for it.
