The 2001 AK Selects hockey team won the Little Caesars Hockeytown Fall Challenge last week in Detroit, beating host Little Caesars South 3-1 in Sunday’s championship game.
The team included 12-year-old players from Anchorage, Fairbanks, Wasilla and Soldotna.
The Alaskans didn’t lose a game in the Tier I tournament, which featured a number of nationally ranked youth teams.
They were 2-0-1 in the preliminaries, beating York Express of Toronto 5-1, tying the Cleveland Barons 5-5 and topping the Woodhaven Leafs of Michigan 5-2. In the semifinals, the beat the nationally ranked Saginaw Jr. Spirit 3-1.
In the championship game, the Alaskans led 2-0 late in the game when nationally ranked Little Caesars pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. Little Caesars scored to make it a one-goal game with 53 seconds left, but the Alaskans knocked in an empty-netter with one second left for the two-goal win.
The win gives the Selects a berth in December’s outdoor Winter Classic at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
