Iowa man wins Homer Halibut Derby

The Associated PressSeptember 23, 2013

— An Iowa fisherman has been declared the winner of the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby.

Gene Jones of Bellevue caught his 236.2-pound fish on July 25 and had to wait until last week to learn he had caught the largest fish.

The fish earned him $21,281.50 in prize money.

Jones caught the behemoth while fishing with Capt. David Bayes of Central Charters.

Jones tells the Homer News (http://bit.ly/1b7hu5Q) he learned how to fish from his grandfather. A co-worker traveled to Alaska last year and Jones decided to book a trip after seeing the photos.

He fished with Bayes for two days and caught the big halibut on the second day in 150 feet of water.
