Hatcher Pass road closed for winter

zhollander@adn.comSeptember 24, 2013

The road over Hatcher Pass closed Monday for the winter. The decision by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Works was made after a car hit an ice lens and slid off the road on the Palmer side of the pass, according to Wayne Biessel, superintendent for the Mat-Su Area Office of Alaska State Parks. The state closes the mountain road every fall, usually around this time, Biessel said.

There's about 4 inches of snow in the pass, he said. Archangel Road remains open until more snow falls.

The pass road generally reopens by early July.
