Response to Sen. Fred Dyson’s Compass of Sept. 26:
To equate the irrefragable right to abortion, as guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment, with cosmetic procedures of “hair restoration” and “the removal of old age wrinkles” as Dyson has done in a recent editorial, is one of the most insulting and misguided pieces I have ever read in this paper. A woman’s right to choose is protected by our constitution, just like a person’s right to bear arms or assemble. Demeaning political sophistry clouds an issue essential to the well-being of the poorest among us.
I adjure Sen. Dyson to debate this issue with the gravitas it deserves, setting aside religious histrionics and constitutional bowdlerization.
Failing that, I would suggest Sen. Dyson’s 16 years in service of the people of the State of Alaska is enough.
