I would enjoy seeing comments from race organizers and Mr. McKay if they feel it is safe to run a race near a large bull moose in rut, or for that matter, any moose at any time of year? After all, if someone needs to stand by with a weapon to dispatch a large and potentially dangerous animal, shouldn’t the race have gone down a different trail? How about using pepper spray or firing cracker shells or bean bags at the moose to chase him further off the trail?
I would gather that, in Anchorage, more moose charge people than bears do. Would the race organizers have allowed children to run past a bear as long as a guy with a gun was around?
Folks, if we are “Wild About Anchorage.” we should think about how to keep it wild safely!
