South's Williams, West's Lekander win CIC singles titles; West claims tennis team crown

dwoody@adn.comOctober 5, 2013

— South senior Whitney Williams seized her third straight girls singles title and boys singles champion Reed Lekander helped West win the team title Saturday in the Cook Inlet Conference tennis championships at The Alaska Club North.

South also won titles in boys doubles and mixed doubles, and West took the girls doubles title. All five finals were decided in straight sets, as were all 10 semifinals.

The day went entirely according to form. In all five finals, the tops seeds beat the second seeds.

West, which had a player or players in each of the five finals, racked 19 points to South's 16 -- those schools were co-champions in 2012. Dimond finished third with 11 points.

Williams topped West's Ava Lekander for the second straight year, winning 6-1, 6-1.

Williams captured titles all four years of her high school career. She opened as a freshman by combining with Taylor Heber to win a doubles title, then fitted herself with three singles crowns.

Reed Lekander, like Williams the top seed in his division, prevailed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over second-seeded Cole Fox of Dimond.

In girls doubles, West's Kate Brown and Alli Haynes turned aside South's Tyanna Baker and Zoe Flynn, 6-2, 6-1.

South's boys doubles team of Daniel Frentzel and Justin Wolfe beat West's Chas Anderson and Keenan Hodges, 6-4, 6-3.

In mixed doubles, South's Palden Flynn and Bryce Foster defeated West's Anton Clark and Ellen Silverman, 6-2, 6-0.
