Market Fresh: Last hurrah for several farmers markets

They say good things come to those who wait. That'll be the case at the South Anchorage Farmers Market this week.

It's the final outdoor market of the season at the Subway/Cellular One Sports Center and there will be some treats. This is also the final week for the Anchorage Farmers Market and the Wednesday Northway Mall Farmers Market.

Two Sisters' Greenhouse will have hot stew and chowder to ward off the chill, and the two sisters invite customers to "stop by for a complimentary warm-up cup."

They will also have plenty of potatoes (Yukon gold, magic Myrna, Denali and red chieftains and small bags of multicolored baby potatoes), along with organically grown heirloom tomatoes and savory cherry tomatoes.

"For fresh preserves, we have a healthy assortment of all Alaskan berry jams and jellies," says Pam Lewis. "We are offering a variety of pickled products, including pickled beets and pickled carrots."

Mark Rempel says the recent weather has helped make these last few weeks abundant.

"What was a very scary looking fall (snow coming too soon) has turned wonderful for those of us who depend closely on the weather," he says. "Because of the extended warmth we will still have lovely kales, dabs of broccoli and cauliflower, incredibly sweet celery, and of course carrots ... for much of the winter."

Among the highlights at the popular veggie stand this week are: 12 varieties of potatoes, Brussels sprouts, sugar pumpkins, beets, salad mix, bokchoi, Napa cabbage, green cabbage, parsnips, collards, daikon radish and Snow Apple turnips.

"We will also have seven more different kinds of winter squash and celery," Rempel says. "The squash are in need of a warm dry fall, which works perfectly with sitting on your counter or centerpiece for a week or two to ripen."

In addition to the South Anchorage market, the Rempels will also be at the Northway Mall Wednesday market, which is also in its final week.

Other vendors lined up for the South Anchorage market include: Glacier Valley Farm, VanderWeele Farm, Juice Jelly and Jam, Arctic Choice Seafoods, Stockwell Family Farm, Sweet and Sassy Kettle Corn, Alaska Sprouts, South Fork Jams and Jellies and Three Bears Farm.

While the South Anchorage market is leaving the parking lot after this weekend, vendors will be inside the Dimond Center on Oct. 19 for the South Anchorage Winter Market. Vendors interested in signing up can contact Arthur Keyes at 354-5833.

CENTER MARKET

Expect the regular items, plus something a little extra sweet this week at the Center Market (Wednesday and Saturday).

"Honey comb enters the lineup as well as new cuts of beef back in inventory," says Duane Clark of Country Health Foods.

He'll also have scallops and shrimp and local honey.

A.D. Farm had loads of vegetables and pork products. Veggie highlights include a variety of carrots, beets and potatoes.

FROM THE SEA

Dannon Southall from 10th& M Seafoods says this is a "great week for fresh seafood ... the highlight of the week is fresh spot shrimp from Southeast Alaska.

"These wonderful large sweet will be available all week long. The season is very short so now is the time to take advantage of these shrimp."

Also fresh this week is true cod and black cod fillets. The white fish fillets are going for $6.95 per pound and $15.95/pound respectively. Halibut is still available, with the fillets at $19.95/pound and the cheeks at $20.95/pound. Kachemak Bay oysters are also in the store.

Saturday: Anchorage Farmers Market, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 15th and Cordova in the Central Lutheran Church parking lot; Center Market, The Mall at Sears, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; South Anchorage Farmers Market, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Subway/Cellular One Sports Center at the corner of Old Seward Highway and O'Malley Road
