The number of Americans killed in all wars since 1775 is 1.17 million. The number of Americans killed by firearms, including suicides, since 1968 is 1.38 million. (Read that a couple times) This is either due to the availability of guns or, if “guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” Americans are more violent and suicidal than other developed nations (four times Canada, 10 times Germany, 40 times Britain, 166 times Japan).
You may feel that you are personally safer with a gun, but you or a family member are more than 10 times more likely to be killed by your own gun than kill an attacker. Our talented, well-equipped military can defend us. If you think having a gun protects you from the U.S. government, good luck, you don’t have much faith in our military. You can debate the right to bear arms, you can’t debate the safety of bearing arms. Loose gun laws that will clearly kill more Americans than any war or terrorist group can’t be considered patriotic.
