Kelly gets NLCS Game 1 start for Cards

St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Kelly will get the Game 1 start for the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kelly will face off against Dodgers starter Zack Greinke in the series opener, which takes place Friday at Busch Stadium.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny will turn to rookie right-hander Michael Wacha for Game 2 and veteran righty Adam Wainwright in Game 3. Wacha will go against Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw. Los Angeles has not named a Game 3 starter yet.

Kelly started Game 3 of the NLDS against the Pirates and got a no-decision, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked four.

"You look forward to just getting to the playoffs," said Kelly. "To be named a Game 1 starter, I got chills and goose bumps."

It's uncertain if or when Lance Lynn would start for the Cardinals. Lynn started Game 2 of the NLDS against Pittsburgh and was tagged for five runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking three, in 4 1/3 frames.

Wacha was fabulous in his lone NLDS start in Game 4, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning. He yielded one run on one hit with nine strikeouts and two walks in 7 1/3 innings.

Wainwright, of course, was the star for St. Louis, winning both of his NLDS starts. In Game 5, he allowed just one run, tossing the complete game.

In 16 innings this postseason, Wainwright has allowed two runs on 11 hits, striking out 15 and walking just one.
