Bears, Braves top pool play at Grace

Kodiak and Mt. Edgecumbe topped pool-play competition Friday in the 18th annual Lady Grizzlies volleyball tournament at Grace Christian School.

Kodiak, the lone Class 4A team in the 12-team tournament, posted a 10-0 record to win the six-team A pool. Anchorage Christian and Valdez trailed with 6-4 records.

In the six-team B pool, Mt. Edgecumbe finished with an 8-1-1 record to edge Grace Christian, which was 8-2. Mt. Edgecume is the defending Class 3A state champion and Grace Christian is the defending state runnerup.

Competition resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. The championship match is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.

Friday's pool play records

Pool A -- Kodiak 10-0, Anchorage Christian 6-4, Valdez 6-4, Dillingham 5-5, Homer 3-7, Houston 0-10.

Pool B -- Mt. Edgecumbe 8-1-1, Grace Christian 8-2, Monroe 6-4, Seward 5-5, Barrow 2-7, Eielson 0-10.

East 3, Bartlett 1

Taria Page pounded 20 kills and Morgan Hill had 13 Friday to help East derail Bartlett in the only Cook Inlet Conference volleyball match that went beyond three sets Friday.

The T-birds won 25-14, 25-15, 23-25, 25-11.

Mafi Makihele dished 28 assists for East.

Autumn Plews led the Bartlett hitting attack with eight kills. Fia Manu added six and Savannah Sahara had four. Kayla Panzarella finished with 13 assists for the Golden Bears.

Dimond 3, West 0

Dimond's Leah Swiss and West's Rita Dexter put on a hitting show Friday in Dimond's 25-17-29-27, 25-20 win over the Eagles in a CIC volleyball match at West.

Swiss ripped 18 kills to go with 12 digs to lead the Lynx, while Dexter put down 15 kills and added nine digs and four service aces for West.

Also contributing for Dimond were Chrisalyn Johnson (8 kills), Rohyn Huss (5 kills, 9 aces) and Jenna Mixson (22 assists).

For West, Rebecca Jones and Ashlee Tua produced nine kills and nine digs, respectively, and Anne Vollertsen handed out 21 assists.

Service 3, Eagle River 0

Morgan Christy's five kills and seven blocks and Tayleigh Talmadge's seven kills and four aces helped Service stop Eagle River 25-12, 25-10, 25-9 Friday in a CIC match at Service.

Alyssa Flynn added five kills for the Cougars, who got 14 digs from Monique Mojica and 14 assists from Katie Brown.

South 3, Chugiak 0

Kayla Sims sparked the offense with 35 assists Friday, powering South past Chugiak 25-14, 25-10, 25-11 in a CIC match at Chugiak.

Chugiak's Rachel Gregg and Kirstin Veech had a hand in eight blocks apiece, but South still managed to get eight kills apiece from Tatum Upchurch and Caitlin Sweeney.

Aspen Avery anchored South's defense with 16 digs. Veech added 10 digs for Chugiak, and Gregg tallied six kills.
