Matt Thomas continues UAA tradition by winning his debut

Posted by DOYLE WOODY, on October 11, 2013

Matt Thomas kept the streak alive tonight with UAA's 3-1 victory over Quinnipiac at Sullivan Arena in his debut behind the bench -- all five coaches in Seawolves hockey history have won their first college game.

Thomas joined Brush Christiansen, Dean Talafous, John Hill and Dave Shyiak.

We used the phrase "first college game'' because Brush's inaugural team in 1979 lost its first four games, all against Senior League competition that was very strong. But Brush and the boys won their first college game, pumping UAF 13-3.

Talafous in 1996 won his debut, 3-2 on the road against UAF.

Hill in 2001 won his debut, 5-3 over Northeastern at Sullivan.

And Shyiak in 2005 won his debut, 6-3 over Rennselaer at Sullivan.

By the way, Brush, the father of Seawolf hockey, was on hand to see Thomas' win.
