— An unknown woman was hit and badly injured by a taxi in Bethel early Saturday morning, according to police.

At 3:54 a.m., Bethel police received the report of a Quyana Cab driver hitting a woman on State Highway in front of Raven Road, according to a statement from the department.

Police hadn’t determined the woman’s identity as of Saturday afternoon. She was described as an Alaska Native in her 20s. According to police, the driver and witnesses said the woman abruptly appeared in the lane of the highway.

Medics transported her to Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp. and she was flown to Anchorage to treat what police described as serious injuries.

Police are investigating but don’t believe that the incident involved reckless driving or foul play, according to the statement.
