After the UAA Seawolves pulled off a sweet comeback to beat Air Force in the late stages of regulation and win its Kendall Hockey Classic, the UAF Nanooks got off to a sweet start tonight in their Brice Alaska Goal Rush.
Trailing Denver 2-0 until the last minute of the second period, the Nanooks staged a comeback they finished with Garrick Perry's strike with just 25.2 seconds left in OT to secure a 3-2 victory at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks.
Marcus Basara got the Nanooks to within 2-1 when he scored late in the second period and Cody Kunyk notched the game-tying goal about seven minutes into the third period.
That UAF win, coupled with Western Michigan's 6-2 victory over UAA, means Saturday night's UAF-Western Michigan game will decided the tournament title. In five previous Goal Rush tournaments, an Outside team has never taken the title -- UAF, the defending champ, has won three times, and UAA has won twice.
By the way, UAF rookie goaltender Davis Jones stopped 23 shots for the win in his Nanooks debut.
