Nanooks stage furious third-period comeback for 5-4 victory

The UAF Nanooks staged a huge third-period rally tonight -- three goals, including the game-winning strike with less than two minutes to go -- to score a 5-4 nonconference victory over visiting Mercyhurst.

The fingerprints of Colton Beck and Cody Kunyk were all over this one. Down 4-2 in the opening minute of the third period and killing a penalty, Beck struck short-handed off a Kunyk helper. Beck's power-play goal midway through the period, off a primary assist from Beck, forged a 4-4 tie. And Kunyk's team-high fifth goal, off a primary assist from Beck, delivered a 5-4 lead at 18:21 of the third period.

Beck finished two two goals and two helpers, and fired five shots. Kunyk went 1-2--3 with four shots. Their linemate, Nolan Huysmans had one goal and one helper. That gives Huysmans four goals in five games after scoring five goals in 37 games as a freshman last season. Granted, playing with Kunyk and Beck helps.

Davis Jones made 30 saves for the Nanooks.

The game was old-school in that it was played at the Patty Ice Arena, the program's old home rink. Their usual haunt, the Carlson Center, is the site of the Alaska Federation of Natives convention. Also, the Nanooks wore throw-back sweaters -- no nameplates on the back of them.

UAF is 3-1-1.
