It would be more fair to have a sales tax so everyone would have an interest in the city operating in a fiscally responsible manner. The repeated inference that the sales tax has been set forth and defeated four times in recent history is disingenuous as this statement doesn’t reference the double jeopardy property taxpayers are thrust into because it has never been put forth as a replacement for property taxes, only as a reduction measure. And every property owner is aware that the reduction would only be temporary, and the Assembly would go back to the trough and raise taxes every time some union or special interest decided they needed more money.
These employees of the city are just that, employees. They deserve no more special consideration than any employee in the private sector. To continue to put their desires above the needs of the taxpayers is patently unfair.
