Searchers are looking for a 20-year-old Akhiok man last seen leaving the village on an ATV Saturday morning.

Brandon T. Phillips told people in the village, located 150 miles southwest of Kodiak, that he had plans to go for a hike, according to an Alaska State Troopers dispatch posted online.

He left town at 6:20 a.m., troopers said.

When he hadn't returned by 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, the village's public safety officer organized search parties.

Searchers found an abandoned ATV and a kayak northwest of the village that Phillips may have used, troopers said.

Two U.S. Coast Guard helicopters were searching the area Sunday night.

Bad weather, including fog, rain and 50-mile-per-hour winds in Akhiok, has so far prevented nine members of the Kodiak Island Search and Rescue group from joining the effort to find Phillips.
