Erstwhile Aces Ortio shines in AHL again; Calgary moves could move Brossoit

Couldn't help but notice that erstwhile Alaska Aces goaltender Joni Ortio, up in the AHL with Abbotsford on a road trip, was backed up by an emergency backup goaltender tonight.

That's because Abbotsford's No. 1 goalie, Reto Berra, was summoned to NHL Calgary after the Flames put Joey MacDonald on waivers. If another NHL team claims MacDonald by Sunday morning, that would likely mean the Aces would lose rookie goalie Laurent Brossoit -- he's starting against Bakersfield tonight -- and leave the Aces in need of a goaltender. They also have returning standout Mark Guggenberger, but veteran returner Gerald Coleman is still shelved from offseason hip surgery and on the inactive list.

If MacDonald, who has a one-way contract, goes unclaimed, he could be assigned to Abbotsford.

In any event, Ortio shined again tonight on the road for Abbotsford. He stopped 35 shots in regulation and overtime in a 3-2 shootout win at Hamilton. For the Heat, he's 3-0-0 with a 2.14 goals-against average and .929 save percentage.
