Letter: Shame on cuts to food program

Anchorage Daily NewsNovember 3, 2013

Politicians who choose power instead of the common good, like the Republicans in Congress, of which Don Young is one, do a disservice to us all.

For example, the Republicans in Congress, including Don Young, forced a reduction of funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps). In September 2012, 47.7 million Americans received a SNAP average benefit of $134.29 a month, or $4.47 a day. In 2013 the Republicans in Congress cut funding for the SNAP program by about 5 percent. Forty-nine percent of the households receiving SNAP assistance have children. Shame on the Republicans in Congress (Don Young) for choosing power instead of funding the SNAP program to feed children and Americans who need help.
