My uncle Tommy O'Malley, resident of Girdwood and the most accomplished pie maker I know, has given up on the whole labor-intensive Thanksgiving meal thing in favor of a party where he serves only pie. He calls it Pie First. If he read food blogs, which he doesn't (he likes his recipes and his news on paper), he would fully approve of the local food blogosphere's pie saturation levels right now. Alaska From Scratch has a pumpkin-ginger tart (read:pie) and Allergy Free Alaska's Megan Ancheta has a gluten-free, vegan apple pie and a vegan maple-pumpkin pie.
Meanwhile, in honor of the fresh snow, there is a healthy selection of recipes for warm plates perfect for cold nights. Kim Sunée was making ox tail stew with prune, tomato and carrot. Nicole Pierce of Arctic Garden Studio has both pork chops with madeira-bay butter as well as mushroom bourguignon. And, Heidi Drygas of Chena Girl Cooks (with special guest Kate Consenstein) posted their Alaska Sustainable Seafood Cookoff-winning recipe for roasted Alaska spot prawns with fennel, olives and oranges.
