Letter: Handshake, smile go a long way

November 6, 2013

Thank you to Ms. Mall, principal of Winterberry Charter School, whose handshake and welcoming smile every morning remind me of how fortunate I am to live in Anchorage.

Ms. Mall’s morning greeting does wonders to lift hearts and make children and their parents feel like members of a larger learning community. Her caring and considerate leadership inspire me to be a better community member myself, by remembering to greet my neighbors and neighborhood children with an open heart.

By looking at the people around us and acknowledging them with a smile and a friendly word, our neighborhoods become an extension of our homes, and a better place for all of us to live.
