Dimond became the first Cook Inlet Conference volleyball team to clinch a spot in next week’s state tournament, downing Chugiak on Wednesday in the second round of the CIC tournament at Service High.
Service stayed alive in the double-elimination event that awards state berths to the top three teams, earning a sweep of Eagle River in a loser-out match, and West knocked off East in four sets in the only remaining first-round match.
Dimond needed four sets to take down Chugiak 26-24, 25-14, 20-25, 25-19. Leah Swiss turned in 23 kills and 31 digs, with Chrisalyn Johnson adding 17 kills and 22 digs.
Taliyah Edwards and Rohyn Huss sparked the Lynx attack with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, Heidi Andrus backed the defense with 36 digs and Jenna Mixson and Allie McDonnell dished a combined 60 assists.
“It was a really competitive match,” Dimond coach Kim Lauwers said. “Chugiak played amazing.”
Rachel Gregg’s 13 kills and 10 blocks propelled the Mustangs, with Kirsten Veech adding five kills and 10 digs. Sara Rutz accumulated 22 digs to go with Elle Gray’s 13.
“We just wanted to continue to play our game,” said Chugiak coach Bobbi Mason. “We play with confidence and we play with class.”
Service swept Eagle River 25-10, 25-13, 25-8, led by 11 kills from Tayleigh Talmadge, 11 assists from Cydney Clark and 14 digs from Monique Mojica. Morgan Christie chipped in with six kills, six blocks and two aces.
West and East battled through the first match of the CIC tournament to extend beyond three sets, West coming out on top 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17.
Rita Dexter ripped 16 kills for the Eagles, with Anne Vollerton’s 46 assists stimulating the offense. Rebecca Jones tossed in eight kills and five aces, with Dianna Lebontiu notching 15 digs.
