Police ask for help finding owner of stolen brown bear rug

Anchorage police are asking the public to help them find the owner of a brown bear rug they believe was stolen.

Detectives found the full-size bear rug, head and all, while investigating a case that happened within the year, police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said Friday.

Castro refused to describe the rug in detail, as that would compromise the detectives' investigation, she said. But the rug's owner would be able to identify it because it is "such a unique piece," Castro said.

The rug appears to have had professional taxidermy work done within the last three to five years, she said.

The police department's non-emergency line is 786-8900.
