Chugiak volleyball team still alive

Anchorage Daily NewsNovember 15, 2013

The host team is still in the hunt at the Class 4A state volleyball tournament.

Chugiak notched wins over West Valley and Palmer in the losers bracket Friday at Chugiak High, and can still win a state title if it posts consecutive wins Saturday over Kodiak, Dimond and South.

Chugiak lost to Kodiak in the first round, but will face the Bears again in a loser-out match at 10 a.m. A win would earn the Mustangs a shot at Dimond in a noon match, and South awaits the winner of that match in the final.

Led by 16 kills and eight blocks from Rachel Gregg, the Mustangs downed West Valley 25-22, 25-11, 25-19. Rachel Topf and Anna Ingraham each dished 14 assists, Emma Toth added four kills and a block and Sara Putz turned in 12 digs.

Gregg was at it again in a 22-25, 25-17, 26-24, 22-25, 15-12 win over Palmer, the first match in the tournament to reach five sets. She finished with 31 kills and six blocks. Ingraham distributed 33 assists, Natalie Stark racked 15 kills and seven blocks and Topf delivered 13 assists and 10 digs.
