Here are your Alaska connections in college hockey (we count 76)

Posted by DOYLE WOODY, on November 19, 2013

OK, The Blog has finally slogged through the rosters of well more than 200 college hockey teams to compile the annual list of Alaskans playing their pucks in college.

In the six years The Blog thinks he has been producing this list, the 2013-14 season features the most Alaskans with 77, nine more than last season.

The gains came in Division III, where 36 Alaskans are listed on rosters, compared to 27 in Division III last season.

As usual, Anchorage is home for more than half the Alaskans playing in college with 41. Fairbanks checks in with 15, North Polle and Wasilla with four each, Soldotna with three, and Palmer, Kenai and Eagle River with two each. Chugiak, Juneau, Kasilof and Copper Center each are represented by one player. (To compile the list, we used rosters at and some rosters on school websites, so we’re going to the hometowns listed).

You can easily make the argument that Notre Dame senior goaltender Steve Summerhays of Anchorage is making the greatest impact – he’s 8-2-1 with a 1.66 goals-against average, .936 save percentage and three shutouts for the Fighting Irish, who are ranked No. 6 in a pair of national polls.

Among women, Vermont sophomore defenseman Danya Colang of Fairbanks is off to a blistering start with 5-5—10 totals in 12 games after going 2-8—10 in 32 games as a freshman.

And Minnesota-Duluth junior forward Zoe Hickel of Anchorage owns 4-5—9 totals in 12 games, with one power-play goal and two short-handed strikes.

As always, if there is an omission, please email (remember, only varsity teams, not club-level – gotta draw the line somewhere).

Anyhow, here’s the list:
