Letter: US should join war on diseases

November 25, 2013

We have a historic opportunity to end the millions of deaths from AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in our lifetime!

Yes, it’s possible, if we continue and build upon the work of the last 10 years. In that time and with the support of the United States and other nations, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has transformed our ability to fight these killer diseases and saved millions of lives. The end to the AIDS epidemic, TB and malaria is in sight. But the Global Fund needs continuing support.

The U.S. is leading the current replenishment effort by hosting a conference of donor nations in Washington, D.C., in December. It is critical that the U.S. join other nations and renew its support by pledging $5 billion over the next three years to continue this life-saving work. U.S. leadership leverages the dollars of other donors to battle these diseases. The substantial return on investment has been demonstrated. This moment in history will be remembered if we act to support the Global Fund now.
