Talkeetna Bachelor Auction and Wilderness Woman Contest
In Alaska, it's traditional to prefer your men scruffy and your women capable. Celebrating this and raising funds for Women and Children in Crisis is the 34th Annual Talkeetna Bachelor Auction and 29th Wilderness Woman Contest. Hosted by the Talkeetna Bachelor Society, the festivities will begin Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m. when single ladies age 21 and over are invited to demonstrate their proficiency at skills including water-fetching, shooting, chopping wood and "beverage opening." At 7 p.m., the Bachelor Auction will begin at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar (doors open at 6 p.m.). Ladies will have a chance to bid on bachelors ages 21 to 70 and win a date to the Bachelor Ball. Tickets to the auction are $20. See talkeetnabachelors.com for full schedule and details.
The Deadly Gentlemen
There's something warming about great bluegrass when it's snowy outside, and this weekend Boston-based quintet The Deadly Gentlemen will bring their buoyant, fast-paced picking to Tap Root Public House. This is a concert in two partsSaturday and Sunday. The first has general seating at 7 p.m. Then at 10 p.m., the floor will be opened for dancing. Both parts cost $22 at centertix.net.
UAA Pottery Sale
There are a lot of options if you want to purchase handmade mugs, bowls and other items in this town and the twice-yearly UAA Pottery Sale is one of Anchorage's best. UAA ceramics students will sell their wares 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Gordon Hartlieb Hall. It is practically a fact that coffee tastes better from a great ceramic mug, and this is a chance to support student artists as well.
12 Days of Christmas Pub Crawl
It's hard to remember a time when downtown Anchorage wasn't periodically invaded by pirates, Santas and other pub crawlers. And who would want to? Dig out your best ugly sweater and join the third annual 12 Days of Christmas Pub Crawl to raise money for Pump Up The Kids, a program benefitting foster teens in Alaska. To participate, pick up a map from one of these 12 venues: Whale's Tail, McGinley's, Pioneer Bar, Mad Myrna's, Woodshed, Slippery Salmon, Darwin's, Humpy's, Flattop Pizza & Pool, SubZero, Brown Bag and The Avenue Bar. If you can collect a stamp from each place by the end of the night, you'll be entered into a drawing for 50,000 Alaska Airlines miles and other prizes. 7 p.m.-2 a.m. Saturday, downtown Anchorage. The Future of Comics
How many of us started reading the newspaper by going to the comics first? With decreasing newspaper circulation, what's going to happen to all of those comic strips? Dave Kellett -- creator of webcomics "Sheldon" and "Drive" -- will talk about that, his new film "Stripped: The Comics Documentary," and the business of webcomics. 7 p.m. Thursday, Loussac Library Public Conference Room. Free.
