High school hockey: West boys, Chugiak-Eagle River girls post shutouts

With seven goals scored in the first period Wednesday at Ben Boeke Arena, the West hockey team put Bartlett away early in a Cook Inlet Conference affair that ended 12-0 in the Eagles’ favor. 

Dawson Ellingworth, Kevin Hodsdon and Mac Fair each scored twice for the Eagles, who scored three times in the second period and tacked on two more goals in the third. 

West goalie Joe Chekan warded off all 14 of Bartlett’s shots to earn a shutout, with Bartlett goalies Malakye Felix and Dmitri Trihub combining for 56 saves.

Chugiak-E. River wins

The Chugiak-Eagle River girls hockey team earned a 6-0 high school hockey win Wednesday at the Subway Sports Centre over the junior varsity squad from Service-East/South-Bartlett. 

Chugiak-Eagle River goalie Arika Mercer stopped 11 shots in the shutout, with Daylie Hislop scoring the team’s first goal of the season, 90 seconds into the game. Kirsten Watts scored a hat trick and added two assists, and Laura Flodin assisted Jade Pandres on two goals to help Chugiak-Eagle River get its first win.
