Tow companies, AAA again offer free holiday service to prevent drunken driving

Anchorage towing companies and AAA are offering a free holiday-season towing service for people who have been drinking alcohol and shouldn't drive, said a AAA spokeswoman.

Callers don't have to be AAA members to use Tipsy Tow, which runs from Friday through Jan. 2, said Kaelyn Kelly, AAA MountainWest spokeswoman.

Those who want to use the service can call AAA at 800-222-4357. A dispatcher will send Great Land Towing or Vulcan Towing & Recovery, depending on which trucks are closest and available, she said.

Drivers will tow vehicles only up to 10 miles, she said, and the destination has to be a home within the city.

"We're not the party bus; we're here to get you home safe," Kelly said.

Even if the caller is an underage drinker, the tow company will give them a lift, she said.

The tow driver will decide how many people to take, depending on space and seatbelts available in the tow truck, she said.

This is the second year the service has been offered in Anchorage, the only place in Alaska with the AAA-sponsored service, Kelly said.

Last year, the service towed 28 vehicles in Anchorage, Kelly said.
