A 22-year-old already being held by authorities for vehicle theft was charged Friday with 23 felonies and 5 misdemeanors related to multiple vehicle break-ins, according to police.

Kyle Spernak is accused of theft, fraud and forgery after an Anchorage Police Department investigation linked him to vehicle break-ins as far back as July, police said in a news release.

On at least seven occasions, Spernak allegedly broke into vehicles and stole personal checks. He'd often steal only one or two checks from the books, police said, and then write them out to himself. From July to September, Spernak allegedly cashed some $1,900 in fraudulent checks, according to the release.

Last week, Anchorage police reported that thefts from vehicles between January and October this year had jumped 40 percent from the year before.

Spernak was already in custody when charged with Friday's multiple counts. He is arrested in October vehicle theft and wanted on a warrant related other break-ins, police said.
