Bethel, ACS to meet for titles in ACS tourney

sports@adn.comJanuary 3, 2014

Anchorage Christian and Bethel will meet in both of Saturday’s championship games of the Lime Solar-Pepsi Invitational basketball tournament at ACS.

Both ACS teams administered bruising beatings to semifinal opponents Friday. The boys walloped  Eielson 86-13, limiting the Ravens to four field goals and rendering them scoreless in the fourth quarter. The girls buried Valdez 73-43.

Bethel’s Theodore Naneng pumped in 34 points to help the Warriors advance both of their teams to the title games. Naneng’s big game carried Bethel’s boys past Barrow 65-58, and the girls came through with a 36-26 semifinal win over Barrow.

Boys

ACS showed no mercy against Eielson, charging to a 29-4 lead after one quarter and a 53-6 lead after two.

Nate Simmers topped the Lions with 19 points and was joined in double figures by Christiano Lopez (15 points) and Immanuel Lopez (14). Seven other players contributed points.

Kyle White led Eielson with nine points, including all seven of his team’s third-quarter point.

Only five players scored for the Bethel boys, but it didn’t matter because of Naneng’s big game.

Naneng scored 12 of his points in the final quarter to help the Warriors hold off Barrow. Cory LePore added 10.

For Barrow, Lawrence Kaleak scored 15 points, Isaiah Savok added 11 and Sione Tuai 10.

In consolation play, Petersburg beat Valdez 51-41 and Kotzebue stopped Point Hope 49-43.

Triston Welton scored 16 points and Andrew Hedman chipped in 15 to lead Valdez.

A big second half lifted Kotzebue, which outscored Point Hope 33-18 in the second half.

Girls

Dallas Dickerson surpassed the 20-point mark for the second straight night to lead ACS past Valdez 73-43 in semifinal action.

Dickerson poured in 24 points and Bryn Tenneson added 12 for the Lions. Marion Wamsley’s eight points led Valdez.

In the other semifinal, Riana Joseph’s 14 points and Marina Crow’s 10 points powered Bethel. Rose Mongoyuk led all scorers with 16 points for Barrow, which was held to three points in the decisive second quarter.

In consolation play, Petersburg edged Kotzebue 59-56 behind a 25-point performance from Kylie Wallace. Mary Sue Hyatt led Kotzebue with a game-high 26 points.

Eielson’s 42-26 consolation win over Point Hope included 16 points from Larissa Franklin.
