Letter: Spending more, reducing deficit at same time remains impossible

January 7, 2014

Byron Mallott’s Compass piece of Jan. 5 left me confused and bewildered. In his “vision for Alaska” he wants to restore fiscal sanity because “Gov. Parnell’s budget produces deficits as far as the eye can see.”

Then he proposes to expand Medicaid, invest in education, invest in climate change research and hire more troopers and village public safety officers. My first-grade math taught me that you can’t just spend more money and at the same time reduce the deficit. It’s impossible, folks!

Mr. Mallott is a typical Democrat who believes if you throw good money after bad the fiscal situation will improve. It hasn’t happened under President Obama and it can’t happen under Gov. Mallott.
