Snowmachine access opens for eastern Hatcher Pass on Saturday

Anchorage Daily News / adn.comJanuary 10, 2014

Parts of Hatcher Pass, the popular recreation area in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, opens to snowmachines Saturday, according to the state parks division.

Access to corridors on the pass's east side along Hatcher Pass Road will allow snowmachines from the Gold Mint trail head parking lot at Mile 14.5 to the Hatcher Pass Summit at Mile 19. Parts of the pass on its west side are also open, including a portion of Summit Lake State Recreation Site.

"The trail to the summit is a multi-use trail, so snowmobilers should obey the posted speed limit and watch for hikers, skiers and snowboarders," a press release on the opening says.

There are restrictions on snowmachine use in different areas in the pass that went into effect in January 2013. State parks officials recommend checking online maps of the area.
