Lolita C. Baldor’s article “Culture of disrespect fuels academy sex assaults,” in Friday’s Peninsula Clarion should be required reading for all Alaskans. It is particularly relevant for several reasons. The first of course is all the current sexual abuse scandals being reported not only in the military academies but also in the military services.
Secondly, Representative Geran Tarr is introducing Erin Merryn’s Law to our Alaska legislature. Erin’s Law has been enacted by eight states and is designed to make children and adults aware of the magnitude of sexual abuse and to create a culture of respect for all people. In my opinion, Alaska and the world will be a much better place if this law passes our Alaska Legislature.
