Miknich goals highlight girls hockey game

Kaitlyn Miknich scored twice, including the goal that ended a scoreless tie early in the third period Friday, to power Service-East/Bartlett-South to a 4-0 win over Chugiak-Eagle River 4-0 in the opening game of the girls high school hockey tournament at Dempsey Anderson Arena.

Goaltenders stole the show during the first two periods. Arika Mercer stopped 19 shots for CER and Vandalyn Santern-Hudson stopped 15 shot for the winners. Mercer finished with 28 saves and Santern-Hudson with 21.

Also scoring goals were Kerianne Hansen and Jaden Trboevich. Melanie Bartenstein tallied two assists.

The round robin double-elimination tournament continues with games next week. The state championship game is Feb. 1 at Ben Boeke.
