Letter: UAA could solve funding problem

January 25, 2014

I would like to propose a solution to fix the constant and serious education cuts in Alaska by creating a new mission for the UAA College of Finance. That mission would be to manage the Alaska Permanent Fund, and offer a doctoral degree in the management of large bodies of money. People from all over the world would enroll to learn these skills. The impact on the community would be uplifting.

Last year we paid someone else

$118 million to invest the Permanent Fund. In 10 years that would be over $1 billion. If UAA did the investing and the management fee went solely to support Alaska’s education system, the entire state would benefit.

I believe that UAA has the expertise and motivation to beat the current investors. I ask you to please consider this idea. Why should we be struggling to fund our uncertain education system, just to give away large sums of money?
