Cabela's, a 100,00-square-foot retail store. In addition to thousands of outdoor products, including hunting, fishing and camping gear, the store will feature museum-quality wildlife displays, an aquarium, gun library, indoor archery range, deli, fudge shop and bargain cave. The building's exterior will incorporate log construction, stonework, wood siding and metal roofing. A large glass storefront will allow customers to view much of the store's interior as they approach the building. This is the first Alaska location for the national chain. The site will also provide a recreational vehicle parking area for up to six RVs on the north side of the building, with picnic tables and a dump station.

"Cabela's loves Alaska," said Wes Remmer, communications specialist for Cabela's Inc. "Thousands of Alaskans live the Cabela's lifestyle and for years have shopped with Cabela's through its catalogs and website. It was time to bring them the unique Cabela's retail experience. As the world's foremost outfitter of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, there is no better place for Cabela's than the Last Frontier," he said. Cabela's interior will have an authentically Alaska look and feel, including museum-quality wildlife displays, hand-painted murals, artifacts and more. Nearly everything displayed inside will come directly from Alaska. A large display will showcase the history of sockeye salmon in Alaska; representations of beluga whales and bush planes will hang from the ceiling; old family photos and portraits will line the walls; and more than 300 trophy animal mounts representing Alaska's wildlife -- including moose, bear, caribou, sheep and other animals -- will be featured throughout the store.
Doors open spring 2014. A specific date will be announced in February. Cabela's hasn't officially announced plans to open additional Alaska stores. But the company is in retail expansion mode and looking all across the country, focusing on places where there is a loyal Cabela's customer base and where outdoor recreation is popular. Cabela's operates 50 stores across North America -- 46 in the United States and four in Canada -- and has announced plans to open 20 more over the next two years.
