Bjornsen, Patterson ski to 17th, 18th at U-23s

Erik Bjornsen, who skis for the Alaska Pacific University program and is soon headed to the Olympics, on Thursday finished 17th in the men's 15-kilometer classic-style race at the World Under-23 Nordic Ski Championships in Val Di Fiemme, Italy.

Bjornsen, 22, was clocked in 40 minutes, 38.0 seconds, about 2:11 behind winner Ilvo Niskanen of Finland.

Scott Patterson, 22, of Anchorage, finished 18th in 40:40.6.

In the women's 10-K classic race, Mackenzie Kanady, 20, of Anchorage, finished 49th in 35:11.6.

Wednesday, American Jessie Diggins, a U.S. Ski Team member headed to the Olympics, took silver in the women's freestyle sprint. Kanady, a freshman at UAA, did not get out of the qualification round.

In the men's freestyle spring Wednesday, Bjornsen finished 18th and Tyler Kornfield, 22, of Anchorage and the APU program, finished 19th. Both Bjornsen and Kornfield were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
