Letter: We need clean energy: wind, solar

February 2, 2014

As I watched the president address the country on the current state of the union, I fluctuated between optimism and fear for our children’s future in Alaska.

I was encouraged to hear the president pledge to stand up to big polluters and cut toxic carbon pollution that is disrupting our climate, especially here in the North. He pledged to protect our public lands so America’s wild legacy is preserved. And he plans to improve America’s infrastructure.

But the president wants to continue his “all-of-the-above” energy policy that includes destructive fracking for dirty, outdated fossil fuels like natural gas. Such proposed projects that could cause unimaginable harm to our fisheries. If we truly want our families to be safe and our children to have a secure future, we must move to clean energy like wind and solar. The current and future state of our union depends on it.
